How to Train for Boise’s Toughest Hikes: 5 Key Exercises

Boise’s foothills will humble you if your legs aren’t ready. The good news: a handful of focused exercises will transform how you feel on the climb, and how your knees feel on the way down. Here’s a simple hiking workout to get you trail-ready for Boise’s toughest hikes.

Why strength training makes hiking easier

Steep climbs demand leg and hip power; rocky descents demand single-leg stability and control. Build both and Table Rock stops feeling like a battle and starts feeling like fun. This pairs perfectly with our off-season hiking and ski plan.

5 exercises to train for tough hikes

  • Goblet squats. Build the quad and glute strength that powers you uphill.
  • Step-ups. The most hike-specific move there is; load them as you progress.
  • Walking lunges. Strength plus single-leg stability for uneven terrain.
  • Romanian deadlifts. Strong hamstrings and glutes protect your knees on descents.
  • Calf raises. Underrated insurance against sore, cramping calves on long climbs.

Do two to three sets of each, two or three days a week, and progress the load over time. Not sure how heavy to go? See how much weight you should lift.
