Favorite Boise foothills hike

Our Favorite Hike in the Boise Foothills

Ask anyone on our team for their go-to Boise foothills hike and you’ll start an argument. In the best way. We all have a favorite. But when we want the perfect mix of quick access, a real climb, and a view that makes you stop talking, one trail keeps winning: Table Rock.

Why Table Rock is our favorite

Table Rock starts just above the Old Idaho Penitentiary, minutes from downtown, and climbs steadily to the iconic cross and a sweeping view of the whole Treasure Valley. It’s a genuine workout. Close to 1,000 feet of gain. Without being an all-day commitment. Go at sunrise and you’ll have the city waking up beneath you.

Make the most of it

Bring more water than you think you need (the foothills are exposed and dry), start early in summer to beat the heat, and take the spur trails if you want to extend the loop. Afterward, you’re a short drive from downtown for a well-earned recovery meal. Try one of our favorite healthy spots.

Frequently asked questions

How hard is the Table Rock hike?

It’s moderate. About 3.6 miles round trip with roughly 1,000 feet of climbing. Doable for most fitness levels with a few breaks.

What’s the best time to hike Table Rock?

Early morning or evening, especially in summer. Sunrise and sunset both deliver unforgettable views.

Is Table Rock a good hike for beginners?

It’s moderate, so a reasonably fit beginner can handle it, but expect a real climb. Start with a shorter foothills trail first if you’re brand new to hiking.
