In today’s world of technology and instant gratification, we are constantly bombarded with new insights, research, products, and figureheads who claim to have solved our problems. The messaging is clear: buy this product or follow this person and—boom—instant life change. But that’s B.S., and we all know it. Hard work pays off, and for thousands of years, humans have defied the odds with curiosity, grit, and courage.
Unfortunately (or fortunately), the Instagram gurus are wrong—dead wrong. We can’t start a six-figure business instantly or lose that pesky 15 pounds in a week. Real change takes courage, smarts, grace, and curiosity, and that whole process can take weeks, months, and even years to develop. I do appreciate a good ol’ fashion white-knuckle let’s get this done, but life is complex. Many factors can get in the way. However, I don’t see a lot of really successful, happy people who just stopped at the bottom of the mountain. At some point, we have to cut our losses internally and say, “I might not have what it takes today, but I am going to at least find out what I do have.” That means losing the excuses and getting honest.
Some of the main reasons people don’t even start are because they think they are:
• Under-equipped
• Failed too many times
• Overwhelmed by the challenge
• Lacking self-confidence
• Limited on time
• Scared of the effort
• Afraid of failing
• Reluctant to invest in a health program
• Unwilling to give up food options
And the list goes on…
Starting the Journey
It takes courage to take the first step towards a fitness goal (especially if you have failed before). Whether starting from scratch or returning after a long break, it’s a bold move. This initial step often comes with doubts and fears, but recognizing this courage sets the foundation for your journey.
True progress often lies just outside your comfort zone. Be willing to push yourself beyond what’s comfortable. Growth and freedom start within us, and embracing the discomfort is a significant part of the journey. Remember to a time when you didn't think you could do it- but you did. That's the spirit!
Challenges and setbacks are inevitable. Face them with determination, knowing each obstacle overcome makes you stronger. Let passion and hard work drive you forward. And remember you don't lose as long as you don't quit. Learn, rinse off and get back in the game.
Recognize and celebrate your progress, no matter how small. It is vital that you acknowledge your efforts and be proud of your achievements. Every small win is a step towards your larger goals. Don't talk to yourself out loud in the checkout but- yes, you should totally be self talking when you can. Say things like- nice job, good work on those front squats.
Don’t hesitate to ask for help. Share your goals with family and friends so they can support you. Look into resources that offer guidance and accountability. Connecting with others who share your goals can provide motivation and encouragement. Having a strong support system is crucial. Surround yourself with people who inspire and challenge you. Join fitness communities, find a workout buddy, or engage in group classes to stay motivated and accountable. Remember, you don’t have to do it alone.
It wont be easy. You probably already know that. I know that. Somedays I look at my schedule and plot out all the ways to put more important matters ahead of my health. Yet, after I get on that run at about 3 minutes in I realize- "oh yeah, I love this, this is good for me". You might not love what you are in but take the test- how do you feel after you have finished that workout? Good- huh. Keep it simple friends. Don't overdue it. But don't not do it. Do it. Get up. You are not dead, its called life and it's going to be okay! Let's go!
